I was attracted to this thread by the poster from the movie, The Flying Saucer. This was the first film to capitalize on the growing phenomenon in the late 1940s. I just saw it in the last couple years - decidedly low budget. Interesting point was that the flying saucer was a purely human contrivance. The film hedges on the exact origin - you kind of infer the Russians but I wasn't totally convinced that sophisticated criminals might not also have been behind it.

Back to Kenneth Arnold - are you saying that people only reported disc-shaped craft after Arnold's sighting? I don't know that that is totally true. Seems to me I have seen reports and even photos of apparently disc-shaped objects that predate June 24, 1947. Still it is interesting that the number of reported disc-shaped objects exploded after that. You could argue that the witnesses were influenced by what they were "supposed" to see (PSH). The Keelians amongst us could counter that the phenomenon seized upon the idea and tailored its manifestations to meet our expectations.

I don't know what to think about that - all I know is that the object I saw in 1969 looked like a nickel held at arm's length. It looked metallic and solid (it reflected sunlight and flew into a cloud bank). At the risk of getting Starman all excited, it looked like a nuts-n-bolts piece of non-terrestrial technology.

You are right Skep in that disc shaped ufos have ben seen for centuries if not longer.
