A top Russian astronomer say he expects humans to encounter extraterrestrial civilisations within the next two decades

quite possibly, but what a statement to come out with ??

ok so he's a top astronomer who knows a hell of a lot about the stars, i can except him coming out with his views on wether he thinks there's life out there on other planets.
but to say when we will make contact and what they will look like ??

i think the man is making a complete fool of himself.

and because he's a top astronomer its plastered all over the press and papers ??

so how are we supposed to react then ....." oh he's a top astronomer so he must be right" ??

lets compare it to someone else who's top in their field of work,
lets say a top car mechanic, he tells his friend that he will have a crash next week and the man he will crash into will be wearing a red top and driving a blue BMW and will happen at 3:15 ?

" oh but he's the best car mechanic about so he must be right"

yes i know its a weird comparison , first thing that came into my head, but i'm sure you get what i mean ....... hopefully

WiLF, presuming that evolution happens here and everywhere in the universe, the Russian astronomer seems right about the inevitability we encounter otherwordly folks like us SOMETIME in our history. No idea where he gets those 20 years from though!

I'd easily substitute another 5000 years for that number, if they for instance develop near-lightspeed, generational starships to explore space. Earth is a tiny place, space is humongously big. Personally I suspect he's way behind: our religions filled with gods, angels and demons indicate to me we have been encountering weird ET for millennia.

I agree that it is a silly thing for him to say but then he's giving himself a cushion of 20 years.
