Default The Dangers of Ufology?

The above might explain some marginality but doesn't really explain why the topic of ufology does my head in. That would be due to a propensity for magical thinking and an experience that has shown me that nobody knows what the heck is going on around them. Nothing is impossible anymore - they changed the boundaries and I don't know where they end.

Don't recall that specific term...but imho this book is a must for anyone who wants to seriously look at all the aspects (sociological, anthropological, psychological..) that surround the paranormal and the Trickster theme.

" Charisma is central to Max Weber’s theories of authority, power, and domination. He clearly explained that pure charisma required the working of miracles, and he specifically mentioned prophecy, telepathy, and weather control as manifestations of pure charisma.

Weber’s concepts of rationalization, disenchantment, and bureaucratization are well known. They entail the attenuation and routinization of charisma. As cultures become more rationalized, miracles and magic (i.e., overt control of paranormal and supernatural powers) are suppressed. A variety of institutions are agents for rationalization and disenchantment. Academe is such a force, as are most exoteric religions.
Magic and miracles are never fully eliminated from the world, rather they are expelled from the conscious awareness of cultural elites. They view them as fiction. Indeed, large industries portray the paranormal in and as fiction. In financial terms, these industries dwarf those that attempt to apply psychic powers.
Weber’s theory of charisma was integrated with his ideas on authority. Pure charisma is the primordial source of authority, but bureaucracy is inimical to pure charisma. Consequently, those who directly attempt to apply psychic powers almost always do so outside the purview of large bureaucratic institutions. The trickster is a figure of marginality and of transition. Typically the paranormal is marginalized by establishment elites, but in times of cultural transition, it becomes more publicly prominent. Likewise, charismatic leaders attain greater visibility in times of significant transition. "

That's a good quote. Hansen's book was very enlightening for me. As you mentioned it explores the social, physchological and anthropological aspects of the paranormal but also illuminates the mechanisations of society in general. If anyone is interested in human behaviour they would enjoy this book. I must read it again since I am recall challenged. lol.

It's not an easy read for a lay person like myself, although it's a lot easier than reading a text book on the abovementioned sciences. Hansen realises this and in the introduction suggests a sequence of reading to skip the boring bits (my words). That's the best way to start and then read the whole book cover to cover if inclined.

A great book that addresses many of the things that get talked about on this board. It's too bad more here don't want to take the time to look at books like this because they provide many topics for discussion and areas to investigate about the paranormal.

Probably one of the best modern books on the paranormal.

Who was the senior American Politician who appraently gell out of a window because he was going to speak about UFOs. Wasn't it something to do with Roswell?

I believe it was Forrestal, a cabinetmember and part of the early MJ-12 panels. The story goes he was one of the first abductees, his experience so horrific he threatened his collegues to go public with the message the aliens actually were hostile invaders.

According to UFO lore the CIA helped him out of his hospital window before he embarrassed anybody.

Alleged MJ 12 group...no one has ever shown it to be real.
Nor has anyone shown Forrestal to have been a part of any such ufo group.
Lore is a good word in this case....
