Do Ghosts Actually Exist?

This is my true ghost story.
About 20 years ago,I came home from work to a message from my mother, that my Gran,my mothers mam,was gravely ill.Through family circumstances (I wont get into here)I had not seen her for numerous years.I went to see my Gran along with 1 of my brothers,my mam and my auntie(mams sister).The Priest had already given the Last Rites.I looked at her,and was shocked to see a near skeleton in the last throes of pneumonia.Gran looked nothing like I had remembered her to look like.As the night drew on,my Mam realised Gran could last until the early hours,and left me alone with her.Once alone,I broke down and cried whilst begging her not to die.Gran was in a coma,or was heavily sedated,I don't know.In my grief I let my tears fall on her cheek,hoping in an absurd way,that the youth of my tears might regenerate her life force(ridiculous I know,but I was desperate).My father came to pick me up at around 11.30 pm,to take me home.The journey home was quite long.At 12.47am(the van had a digital clock in the dash) I saw out of the corner of my eye a glow next to me.I looked round(my dad had a van which had 2 passenger seats,side by side)and for a searing nanosecond saw my Gran how I remembered her.She was sitting stock still looking firmly ahead.She then vanished.Forever.I looked at my dad,and said "did you just see her?" He said "who?" I said "nothing".The thing is my Gran was aglow,like the ghosts you see in the movies.Was this her ghost,or my mind playing tricks? I was stone cold sober,and was relatively calm by this time.When I woke for work the next day at around 5am,my Mam was sat at the table alone with a cup of tea.It was clear she had been crying.I asked how Gran was,knowing the answer.My Mam replied that she had died.I asked what time?At exactly the same time we both said 12.47.My Mam looked at me with astonishment.I told her I had seen her.This was at the exact time of her death.This will always be a mystery to me,but I firmly believe it was my Gran saying goodbye for the last time.Take from that what you will.I didn't believe in ghosts until then,and haven't seen one since.

Thanks for sharing that, Gunner. There certainly is a mystery about what happens at death. I tend to think there is a medical or scientific reason rather than a religious one....but that is just my opinion.

In a way Martin,it's a wonderful story,because ever since that experience,whether it was my mind playing tricks,or her spirit really was present,I've lost ANY kind of fear of dieing.I firmly believe that our life force/spirit/soul,call it what you will,lives on.I don't know why I just told that story to the world,as I've only ever told my wife.Probably because I see you all as decent, mature folk.

I'm open to any kind of questions.Please don't feel I'll take it personal if you disagree with it.I'd love a different explanation/viewpoint, than the one I live with.

I agree Dee,I'm not a religious person at all,but I do now believe in different dimensions utterly beyond my understanding.I would gladly take a lie detector test,whilst under the influence of sodium pentathol AS WELL lol,that my brain is convinced in what it perceived to be a ghost,if you get my drift?

There are many possibilities....a higher dimension or plane of existance....re-incarnation....some kind of cosmic consciousness.
OR there is nothing....maybe our bodies are gone but we leave behind some kind of electrical essence that can be detected sometimes.
The main thing is that whatever causes these "ghosts" or apparitions....it is nice when they bring us comfort.

I remember the night after my Grandad died, i dreamed i was knocking at his front door and each time he answered he would be younger? It was strange. I told my Nan and it brought a smile to her face in very difficult times.

Of always thought re-incarnations is possible, but how does it account for the many more living creatures in the world today, then say 10,000 years ago?
