Quran Burning: There Be Idiots Here

President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan has called the soldiers who threw out and burned Qurans with the trash at Bagram Airbase, Kabul, on 22 Februari 2012 'ignorant'. Imo the word he really was looking for must've been idiots, with 23 killed, four members of the United States Armed Forces among them, over the course of mounting protests and street rioting. Add 55 wounded, many Afghan citizens in this number from Afghan Police bullets fired into increasingly threatening crowds, and 7 US soldiers injured by a grenade thrown at a police station.

Very unkind to call anybody an idiot, but forgodsake you're in Afghanistan, you have seen/heard the mosques, imans walk the streets, it is an Islamic country and you cannot figure what's gonna happen when you throw the holy book of Allah on the trash heap? (Even though pages of these Qurans were overwritten with extremist messages, a kind of prisoner info exchange.)

It gets worse because already the US had its forces on Youtube urinating on killed Taliban, elite Marine Snipers posing in front of the Nazi SS flag, then there were the NATO 'mistakes' like an airstrike killing 8 Afghan youngsters, and just across the border killing 24 Pakistani troops.

President Obama and his generals have apologized big-time, using words like 'regret' and 'unintentional' but the Taliban will have none of it.



"Our brave people must target the military bases of invader forces, their military convoys, and their invader bases. They have to kill them (Westerners), beat them, and capture them to give them a lesson to never dare desecrate the holy Quran again"



The response from a segment of the Afghan population, presumably more radical and literal believers of Islam, has been to protest and violently riot for days, four US service personnel seem to have been killed by folks in Afghan Army uniforms, some apparently cleared for a highly secure area to get at a US colonel and major inside the Interior Ministry. These killings are perhaps the biggest problem emerging from the Quran burning for America and its allies (my countrymen are training Afghan Police in Kunduz), because how can you train police and army if you are worrying about them shooting at their trainers? Downright unworkable if you are in direct contact with Afghan collegues, enough to make you prefer avoiding them (which is of course totally impractical).

But the US can't just up and leave, having come to Afghanistan for a reason, it harbored Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters, implicated in the 9/11 attacks, and America wants to deny this territory to terrorists, transform the country instead into as democratic and friendly a place as possible.

Can we turn Afghanistan into a friend of the west? I remember the Quran only allows for opportunist relationships with non-muslims, while condemning true friendships/alliances as betraying Islam, a punishable offense.

"O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people."



If there are Afghans, Pres Karzai or members of his government wishing to speak out for fairness and a more secular approach to the Bragram servicemen's lapse in judgement I'm not hearing them. If there are ONLY calls for their punishment (under Sharia law) and for violence against America, it means we may THINK we are in an alliance/friendship with Afganistan, but it is not mutual. Friends speak out to preserve the life of their friends, even very foolish friends.

IMO anyone who has that much of a reaction with their 'Bible' or whatever 'holy' book being burned has issues that go way beyond the apparent disrespect of a book . Another indication of obsessive religious fanaticism which can apply to any religion.

I don't condone rioting but I do so enjoy it when the ruling class soils itself. There's nothing I can do about the rioting, but at least it loosens the bowels of the ruling class.

Great sounds there with dreadful images, Antrik. As a basic (but lame ) principle I might say we must (try to) have fewer riots, irrespective of rioters' skincolor.

OP does refer to Americas failings, in particular dropping some bombs ON THEIR FRIENDS yes , and I'm not expecting bosombuddy-feeling between Afghans and the West anytime in the future, but the United States armed forces simply are there, boots on the ground as they say, and the apparent acts of BETRAYAL by Afghan Police and Army personnel (judging by the use of uniform/identification in killings) makes it kinda hard for coalition soldiers to trust their Afghan collegues now, don't it?

Well America and it allies have entered a country where religious law dictates desecrators of the Quran get severely punished, possibly by death, plus traditional Muslims (yes quite a few of them in that area) have a tendency to kinda look down on 'unbelievers' (anybody who does not follow the 'true God'), Wu.

That's why I called folks trying to burn Quranic texts in Kabul on a trash heap idiots.

Obama (and soldiers & civilian UN workers inside Afghanistan more so) have a big problem. How to finish training Afghan Army and Police, so they can secure their own country? (I'd be rather nervous giving new recruits a firearm and tell them to go shoot sumtin. ) And one extremely undesirable outcome is for the coalition to exit as one more defeated occupier (Sovjet style), and have the Taliban move in as victors for Allah the day after.

It wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't a president the idiot majority voted for playing GI Joe. It certainly took you long enough to notice the idiots, where've you been for the last 11 years? edit: on second thought I believe the US should round up every one having taught Geography and have them summarily shot.
