Default Police U.F.O. Sightings

1955 hours. 07/11/83. Location - Between Bolton Abbey and Addingham near Skipton, North Yorkshire. Whilst driving with his wife, PS TONY DODD observed a large disc shaped UFO approaching the vehicle from their right. He estimated the size of the craft as being four times that of a car. It was at a low altitude and passed almost directly over the car roof before disappearing behind nearby trees. His wife described the craft as resembling a child’s spinning top. Moments later the same UFO reappeared and swept toward the car once again. PS DODD pulled the car over to a stop and took a series of photographs of the object as it moved away into the distance. The photographs were later sent to a research facility called Ground Saucer Watch in Arizona that specialise in the analysis of reported UFO images. Their conclusion after analysis was that the photographs had recorded a genuine UFO on film, one of the few to meet their strict criteria. They estimated that the object was 30 feet in diameter and was near spherical in shape. This forms a series of sightings by the officer who later became one of the world’s leading authorities on the subject of UFOs.

Thanks very much Mac 5. I have read the British Police reports before, but never the 'off-duty' sightings reports. I feel quite excited having read this one. I had my first 'strange' sighting in this month and year. I was only a six year old child back then and remember it was this month, as it was shortly after Bonfire Night. I couldn't explain what I saw at that age but I do know this now...the description given as a child's spinning top, is exactly how I would remember it to be now, at my age. Whatever it was, it was definitely nuts n bolts because I saw it close up with a friend on moorland and it was around 2 miles from the built up area where I resided then. We had strayed alittle too far and I remember running back and acting hysterical. My father even reported it on my behalf to the Police. Black project aircraft? Maybe. I haven't seen anything like that even today, or anything that even resembles that. Afterall, most projects back then must be public knowledge by now. Whatever it was, remains a mystery and it was this that sparked my interest in the subject.

Default Police U.F.O. Sightings

Antonio Huneeus | Nov 03, 2010
The world’s attention focused on Chile recently due to the extraordinary rescue of the 33 miners trapped in the copper mine of San José near Copiapó, which was broadcast live by all major news networks and received unprecedented international attention. There is no UFO angle to this story as far as I know, but it was a good excuse to look for interesting cases from northern Chile. The Atacama Desert region, where most of Chile’s copper mines are located, is the driest area in the world. Most of the population live in coastal cities and in a few mining towns. This region is also famous for its clear skies and it has become probably the world’s largest astronomical area. The U.S. and the European Southern Observatory (ESO) have built over the years a number of sophisticated observatories, including the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, and ESO’s Observatories in La Silla and a new one called Paranal, which ESO calls “the world’s most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory.” There is also a place in Atacama called Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon), where not a single drop of rain has fallen in hundreds of years. It is in this alien-looking terrain where NASA tested its Mars probes.

With all this celestial lore and incredible clear skies, it’s not surprising that Chile’s northern Atacama region is also rich in UFO sightings. I have many interesting cases in my files, including a couple of fighter jet scramble cases out of the Cerro Moreno Air Force Base in Antofagasta in the late 1970s, but for now I want to discuss a dramatic Close Encounter of the First Kind (CE-I), which occurred near the port of Tocopilla in the Antofagasta region on the night of September 23-24, 1971.

A POLICE CE-I
This case is well documented, as it was reported to and investigated by the Chilean police (Carabineros) and seen by dozens of witnesses. It is virtually unknown in the English UFO literature—the only source in English that I know of was an outline of the case I wrote for the paper, “A Historical Survey of UFO Cases in Chile,” published in the MUFON 1987 International UFO Symposium Proceedings. Besides press accounts, I obtained long ago—courtesy of investigator Luis Riquelme of the Chilean UFO group Orion—a copy of a May 12, 1979 handwritten report signed by a retired police colonel, who was in active service at the time of the incident in 1971. Beginning around 10 p.m. on the night of September 23, a stationary light over the ocean was seen by numerous witnesses in Tocopilla. One of them, who saw the object with binoculars, described it as artificially constructed, with intermittent lights and round windows like a ship’s porthole.
One of the witnesses quoted in the press at the time was the reporter Daniel Cavieres from the Tocopilla newspaper La Prensa. In an interview with the Santiago newspaper Las Ultimas Noticias, Cavieres said that, “around 22 hours [10 p.m.] on Thursday, I was surprised to see off the coast of Tocopilla something that seemed to be a stationary ship with lots of lights. Normally, when ships navigate on the high seas they only use the officially required lights, which are not many. But in this case there was an abundance of lights, which triggered my curiosity. Moreover, I noticed green and red lights which blinked intermittently.” The reporter looked at the object with binoculars and noticed what seemed like portholes and a cabin. Although puzzled, he assumed it was just a ship, not a UFO. Other witnesses, however, thought otherwise. Patricia Miranda, a 15-year old student, immediately alerted her family, yelling when she first saw the object in the sea near Tocopilla, “Look! A flying saucer!”
That was just the beginning. At 1:30 a.m. on September 24, two different truck drivers traveling from Antofagasta to Tocopilla came across a brightly lit object hovering on the coast. The truck drivers rushed to the nearest police station in Tocopilla. Though skeptical at first, a police van with a sergeant and two corporals was dispatched to “KM 33,” the site where the trucks had stopped to look at the UFO. The carabineros confirmed the UFO immediately and kept it under constant watch until 5:30 a.m.; they reported by radio its maneuvers to the Tocopilla “comiser*a” (police station). A report of the event was filed later with the Carabineros Northern Headquarters in Antofagasta and a copy of it was obtained by Las Ultimas Noticias. The police report informed:
“It was possible to confirm that at more or less 2 km. [1.24 miles] from the coast, such artifact remained totally lit, changing places at great speed…later on it came close to the beach of Caleta Buena…. At a distance of 150 meters [492 feet], it could be seen that the object had an approximate diameter of 20 meters [66 feet], with a helicopter-like cabin totally lit and with sections like windows. It was approximately 30 meters [98 feet] above the sea level, being impossible to identify its origin.”

Sept. 25, 1971 article from Las Ultimas Noticias, “The UFO with ‘Birth Certificate’ in the North.”

The colonel’s handwritten report to Orion, dated May 12, 1979, goes into still further details. The colonel reveals, for instance, that the sergeant walked towards the cliff armed with a rifle. “When he arrived to the place where he couldn’t advance further (the edge of the cliff), the sergeant yelled toward the sea; not obtaining a response he made a series of shots towards the luminous object,” states this second police report. “Suddenly, this object moved extremely fast in the direction of the rocky cliff, arriving at a distance no more than 50 meters [164 feet] from the place where the police were.” At that point, continues the report, “the whole area became illuminated like at daytime.” The document quoted also the description of one of the corporals, according to which the UFO was “a sort of rectangular building with many windows that could be seen clearly but with no one inside….” The UFO then passed over the van and continued towards the mountains, where it “remained suspended in the air, throwing a light beam once in a while which would illuminate the area.”

Eventually, the UFO returned to the sea where, around 6:10 a.m., it was seen and reported by radio by Manuel Malatesta, captain of the fishing vessel “Mart*n Pescador.” The ship was some 20 miles from the coast between Antofagasta and Iquique, when “a red ball” flew around it for several minutes. The ship’s owners, Guanaye Fishing Co., even issued a press release about the sighting. After the evolutions over the ship, stated the communiqué, “the unidentified body sank in the sea at a distance of more or less three miles from the ship. The phenomenon was observed by the entire crew.”

This CE-1 is undoubtedly one of the best UFO sightings from Chile. The object was observed continuously by many geographically-independent witnesses for a period of about 8 hours. The closest observations were made by three policemen. The colonel added also in his report to Orion that neither of the policemen had consumed a drop of alcohol. The case remained unsolved and it was appropriately titled by the Santiago newspaper Las Ultimas Noticias, “The OVNI [UFO] with a ‘Birth Certificate’ in the North,” because it was officially confirmed by the police. While most of the observations pointed to the object flying or hovering in the air, the final description by the fishermen indicates that the object went into the ocean, thus becoming a true USO.

UFO CASE REPORT

Cigar‑shaped object with curved tail seen by several, including police officer

Date: November 26, 1978

Location: Clarenville, Newfoundland, Canada

Summary: "Both Mr. Lethbridge and Constable Blackwood describe the same thing: A cigar‑shaped object with a curved tail, in the sky with blue, red and yellow flashing lights. It ranged from about thirty‑five to forty feet in diameter and hovered approximately five hundred feet above sea level with no movement. "

Full Report / Article Source: Lee Tizzard - Brian Vike, HBCCUFO.org
Original Source

Date: November 26, 1978 Time: n/a

This is probably the most well known sighting in Newfoundland. I have copies of official documentation of this event.

On November 26, 1978. A Mr.Chester Lethbridge and his wife, reported to the RCMP a strange object in the sky for the second time over the duration of approximately one week over Random Island, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland.

RCMP Constable James Blackwood, an officer on location at the time went out to the Lethbridge home to investigate. Upon arriving he also saw this strange unidentifiable object in the sky. Both Mr. The object also cast a shadow on the water,so he knew that what he was seeing was not a satellite or distant plant like Venus

This object was also being tracked by the Department of National Defense, Gander, NF. After observing the object with the naked eye for a while, Constable Blackwood took out this ball‑scope, a device used to amplify light sources in the night, to observe the object. This was definitely not a plane nor like any other aircraft Blackwood had ever seen. After observing the object in the sky for a little while longer, Constable Blackwood decided to turn on the flashing lights on his police car, Mr. Lethbridge, however, did not approve of this and went inside.

Constable Blackwood flicked on the flashing blue and red lights on his car, and within seconds the object in the sky imitated the pattern of flashing lights. Constable Blackwood was speechless, being interested in different types of aircraft as a hobby, Blackwood confidently says that though the craft was about the size of DC9 aircraft, it was definitely not a plane; it did not resemble any type of plane ever built to his knowledge. It had no wings and made no noise; it had a curved tail and a cigar‑shaped body and that was all, besides the flashing lights. After a period of about two hours, the object "left the scene like a shooting star, only in the opposite direction."

Shortly after this sighting in Clarenville, Newfoundland, Constable Blackwood, following procedure, made reports and sent them to the NRC ‑‑ National Research Council, in Ottawa. The National Research Council had an upper atmosphere research facility that, at that time, was responsible for UFO reports.

An authority with the NRC by the name of A.G. MacNamara responded to these reports by saying: "The objects were most likely the planet Jupiter, which is quite brilliant. It appears about midnight in mid‑October and is near the Mediterranean Sea. Saturn and several other bright stars are also visible in the Eastern sky at this hour of the night". Constable Blackwood was quite disgruntled at these comments by Mr. MacNamara, and the fact that MacNamara was making these assumptions without even talking to him or any of the witnesses of the sighting.

Blackwood assured me in a 1997 phone interview, that it was not the planet Jupiter nor was it Venus or any other star or planet, for he had seen these in the sky and was positive that this was not what he had witnessed hovering over Random Island for two hours. It must be kept in mind that the object seen by Chester Lethbridge, his wife and Constable Blackwood did cast a shadow on the water, and planets; stars and satellites do not cast shadows.

Blackwood has retired from the RCMP and no longer lives in Newfoundland.

Default Police U.F.O. Sightings

Monday, June 20, 2011

One of the most dramatic encounters by police officers with an apparently structured, low-level UFO occurred in the early morning of April 17, 1966. Officers of the Portage County, Ohio, Sheriff's Department first saw the object rise up from near ground level, bathing them in light, near Ravenna, Ohio, about 5:00 A.M. Ordered by the sergeant to pursue the object, they chased it for eighty-five miles across the border into Pennsylvania, as it seemed to play a cat-and-mouse game with them. Along the route, police officers from other jurisdictions saw the object and joined in the chase.

Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur and Mounted Deputy Wilbur 'Barney’ Neff had left their scout car to investigate an apparently abandoned automobile on Route 224. Spaur described the sighting in these words:

“I always look behind me so no one can come up behind me. And when I looked in this wooded area behind us, I saw this thing. At this time it was coming up . . . to about tree top level. I'd say about one hundred feet. it started moving toward us.... As it came over the trees, I looked at Barney and he was still watching the car . . and he didn't say nothing and the thing kept getting brighter and the area started to get light. .. . I told him to look over his shoulder, and he did.

"He just stood there with his mouth open for a minute, as bright as it was, and he looked down. And I started looking down and I looked at my hands and my clothes weren't burning or anything, when it stopped right over on top of us. The only thing, the only sound in the whole area was a hum . . . like a transformer being loaded or an overloaded transformer when it changes. . . .

"I was petrified, and, uh, so I moved my right foot, and everything seemed to work all right. And evidently he made the same decision I did, to get something between me and it, or us and it, or whatever you would say. So we both went for the car, we got in the car and we sat there...."

As they watched, the UFO moved toward the east, and then stopped again. Spaur picked up the microphone and reported to the dispatcher. At this time, the object was about 250 feet away, brilliantly lighting up the area ("It was very bright; it'd make your eyes water," Spaur said.) Sergeant Schoenfelt, off duty at the station, told them to follow it and keep it under observation while they tried to get a photo unit to the scene.

Spear and Neff turned south on Route 183, then back east on Route 224, which placed the object to their right, and out the left window. “At this time,” said Spaur. "it came straight south, just one motion, buddy, just a smooth glide . . ."and began moving east with them pacing it, just to their right at an estimated altitude of 300-500 feet, illuminating the ground beneath it. Once more the UFO darted to the north, now left of the car, and they sped up to over 100 mph to keep pace with it.

As the sky became brighter with predawn light, Spaur and Neff saw the UFO in silhouette, with a vertical projection at its rear. The object began to take on a metallic appearance as the chase continued. Spaur kept up a running conversation with other police cars that were trying to catch up with them. Once when they made a wrong turn at an intersection, the object stopped, then turned and came back to their position.

Police Officer Wayne Huston of East Palestine, Ohio, situated near the Pennsylvania border, had been monitoring the radio broadcasts and was parked at an intersection he knew the Portage County officers would he passing soon. Shortly afterward he saw the UFO pass by with the sheriff's cruiser in hot pursuit. He swung out and joined the chase. At Conway, Pennsylvania, Spaur spotted another parked police car and stopped to enlist his aid, since their Cruiser was almost out of gas. The Pennsylvania officer called his dispatcher.

According to Spaur, as the four officers stood and watched the UFO, which had stopped and was hovering, there was traffic on the radio about jets being scrambled to chase the UFO, and ". . . we could see these planes coming in.... When they started talking about fighter planes, it was just as if that thing head every word that was said; it went PSSSSSHHEW, straight up; and I mean when it went up, friend, it didn't play no games; it went straight up” (Transcript of taped interview with Dale Spaur).

The Air Force "identified" the UFO as a satellite, seen part of the time, and confused with the planet Venus. Under pressure from Ohio officials, Major Hector Quintanilla, chief of PROJECT BLUE BOOK, had an acrimonious confrontation with witnesses and refused to change the identification, although it was pointed out to him that they had seen the UFO in addition to Venus and the moon at the conclusion of the observation. Major Quintanilla also denied that any jets had been scrambled.

William B. Weitzel conducted an exhaustive investigation on behalf of the NATIONAL INVESTIGATIONS COMMITTEE ON AERIAL PHENOMENA (NICAP), obtaining taped interviews, signed statements, sketches, and all pertinent data which was assembled into a massive report that was made available to congressional investigators. When the UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO UFO PROJECT was initiated in 1966, a copy of Weitzel’s report was hand-delivered to the director, Dr. Edward U. CONDON, for his consideration. The CONDON REPORT, published two years later, does not mention the case. Richard Hall - NICAP

-----

Spauer/Neff, Portage County UFO Chase

Francis Ridge:
If this incident seems familiar to you, just maybe you saw the motion picture, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Investigated by NICAP's William Weitzel, this report, also known as the Spauer/Neff Case, was the basis for the UFO "chase" in this film. This case involves police witnesses, confrontation, light beam, brilliant illumination, light engulfment, sound, cat and mouse chase, with rapid upward departure. Special thanks go out to Mark Rodeghier of CUFOS for providing the documentation and to Loy Pressley for converting them into text so I could make the web pages.

Dr. James E. McDonald:
Ravenna, Ohio (April 17, 1966) calls for reevaluation not only on the scientific grounds involved, but also to avoid unfairly subjecting to local public ridicule the several officers who have testified. (Compare Bertrand & Hunt in the Exeter case) The available evidence (especially Wm. Weitzel's extensive report for NICAP) seems to me to make the astronomical explanation, that now stands as the official Air Force evaluation, quite unreasonable. - NICAP

Was policeman Alan Godfrey abducted by aliens after UFO sighting?

The Halifax Courier
Published on Monday 31 October 2011 12:51

Alan Godfrey and the alleged UFO he saw

On Saturday the Courier revealed how 142 calls - many of them from Calderdale - were made to police reporting supernatural happenings.

Frantic residents reported witches, ghouls, UFOs and vampires.
Today, using material from the Courier archives and the book Yorkshire Stories of the Supernatural by Countryside Books, reporter Ruth Mosalski tells of other unexplained happenings in Yorkshire that have gripped the headlines.
The first is Todmorden UFO sighting by policeman Alan Godfrey...

Police officer Alan Godfrey was on routine patrol in Todmorden in November 1980.
He had been called out to Ashenhurst and was driving along Burnley Road.
Ahead was a bright light.
He stopped the car. Blinked once – and blinked again.
What stood before him, he says, was a metallic disc with a dome and a row of windows.
He began sketching what he saw in his notebook.
Suddenly, there was a burst of light and he found himself 100 yards farther down the road. The UFO was gone.
Later, under hypnosis, he recalled being struck by a beam of light which floated him into the craft.
There, he says, he met a human-like being named Joseph, whose clothing was Biblical.
Alan says that inside the spaceship he was physically examined and asked questions.
He said what he had first seen was a diamond-shaped UFO, hovering about five feet above the ground in Burnley Road before disappearing.
PC Godfrey said he realised he had suffered “missing time.”
At the hypnosis session, he described being enveloped in an intense white light.
He recalled lying on a table, surrounded by small figures with bulb-like heads.
That was one of several sightings that made Todmorden become well-known as a supernatural hot-spot.
In secret papers released earlier this year there were also mentions of sightings on September 4 2003, in the town of “six lights that split, at one point becoming eight lights, that were orange and red in colour.”
Another object was sighted in Queensbury on April 22 2004 and there was a record of a sighting by three police officers in Halifax at 4.50am on November 21 1980. PCs Porter and Turnpenny at Ovenden police station and PC Baxter at Halifax police station saw a “very bright steel blue flashing light” high in the sky, moving left to right over Withins Moor towards Keighley.
A report to the Ministry of Defence read: “Air-traffic control contacted. They have no record of aircraft in the area nor have they tracked anything at all.”
On July 15 1995, three people in Halifax reported an object hovering above their semi-detached house while they were in the back garden.
They told police it looked like the planet Saturn, with a ring around it, and had red portholes and four blue lights.
They said it hovered just feet away, above a bungalow next door. It did not come from the right or left, but seemed to come down out of nowhere.
After five minutes, the flying saucer made erratic, jerky movements before moving off in the direction of Sowerby Bridge.
Around the same time as Alan’s sighting in Todmorden, a UFO was reported to have landed in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, just outside RAF Woodbridge.
