Default '42 Battle Of LA Picture Retouched?

Looks like the iconic photo of those searchlights illuminating something over the skies of Los Angeles in 1942 was retouched.

http://forgetomori.com/category/ufos/ufo-photos/

Here's the link to the LA Times story reporting the same thing (includes 6 pics from the incident):

http://framework.latimes.com/2011/03...f-l-a-1942/#/1

BOLA is like Roswell - it was decades after the fact when it was re-invented as a UFO event. My thought is that this really was just the result of post Pearl Harbor war jitters.

Default '42 Battle Of LA Picture Retouched?

I saw some debunkers docu a couple of years ago in which they mentioned that it was very common to retouch photographs in those days. All about getting more subscriptions for their newspaper. Ironicly they used the 1942 LA pictures to show that

Default '42 Battle Of LA Picture Retouched?

Am I missing something here? The photo needed to be retouched in order for it to show up properly in newsprint.

Why did the guy from the LA times not include the unretouched original? that would be helpful.

Default '42 Battle Of LA Picture Retouched?

I think the point was that the retouching was rather heavy-handed with the intention of making the image more dramatic than it really was. More of interest to us, it might also have erroneously given the impression there was some disc shaped object in the spot where the beams converge.

Hi Skep,

I had a quick look at these when they recently resurfaced and it seems as if the disc is just as defined in the untouched image. Here's a (shoddy) animation I made that I think shows this:

Cheers.

Yeah, my mistake, to put it in context then "(the) "impression of a disc-shaped object†is evident in both the before & after images.

Or maybe they are not powerful spot lights but highly sophisticated black ops heat rays being tested on a balloon? How's that for a new angle on this incident?? People will see what they want to see to fit their perception of what's going on! In my honest opinion (going by what I've read over the years on this incident) folks are just desperately trying to make something outta nothing here!!

IMHO this whole LA Battle pic thing is a colossal waste of time.

The direct link to the article from the 'forgetomori' blog (it was bumped down, and will only get bumped further)

http://forgetomori.com/2011/ufos/ufo...uched-version/

Yeah, sadly the retouching of photos in those days often destroyed the originals, lucky finding the original in this case. Just a curiosity, do you have a link to the original pic? nice animation btw
