Well, someone once told me that the word 'Pom' -as used by the Australians to describe us English (and not usually just the British in general, as they're often Welsh and Scottish, too)- actually originated from P.o.H.M.
meaning Prisoners of His/Her Majesty (the King or Queen).
Which would mean that most Australians were actually the 'poms' themselves, and not us English, since most of the population of Australia was originally formed by Britain sending our prisoners, (and other undesirables), away there to be exiled as a punishment!
Ironically, it's not that easy for us to actually move there now and become citizens, but bliddy theives and murderers got sent there free of charge! :-lol:-lol:-lol
It may well be an apocryphal story, but it does make kinda sense.
