If this were a disinfo op designed perhaps to make the russians think the US had gotton hold of saucer tech, why change the story ?

No idea....but then if it were a real saucer is it likely they would admit to that? That doesn't make sense either.

I have a second home not too far from Roswell ( a hundred miles or so, a typical commute in the Southwest ) and have been there on many occasions. I've talked to older people in restaurants, bars, shops etc., and they really know nothing more than we do. Y'see, back then, unlike today, folks believed everything they were told by the US government. A weather balloon? Well that's what it was. They've grown up believing that. As the site is outside of town there were no eyewitnesses so, really, anyone around at that time gets their information from the same sources we do.
I must say though, they've certainly cashed-in on the event. UFO shops, museums and anything else you can think of, abound throughout the area. Should you ever visit I highly recommend this tour:

But someone Did admit to it, hence the original newspaper headline.

It makes more sense to me that the scenario was one where the media liasion officer put his mouth into gear first, and his brain later.
And the military issued a cover story to help fix that mistake.

But that's the point; no one in the military would ever tell the public a saucer crashed. Just wouldn't happen. So it must have been some kind of lame cover story that they changed.

Think about it though....we just got over a devastating war.....and then something of THIS magnitude happens....the first them the military is conronted with something like this. It makes perfect sense that they would make a mistake and call it like it is!!! The retraction comes AFTER the bigwigs figure out that they better keep this hush hush!!!
No one in infallible....the military does occasionally make mistakes!!!
