You know what dej,its not US that cant take the truth, its the scientists themselves.

from that book

When I reached the Pentagon, Chop was away from his desk. It was 20 minutes before the screening, so I skimmed through the Intelligence reports which had just been cleared. With the sightings was an ATIC statement bluntly refuting the theories of Dr. Donald Menzel, a Harvard astronomer who had tried to debunk the saucers as mirages and other illusions.

Weeks before, I'd been told what most Air Force officers thought of Menzel's theories. But to make it official, I'd put some pointed questions to Project Bluebook. This was the ATIC answer.

"These explanations were known to the Project, and carefully considered, long before Menzel published his theories. They explain only a small per cent of the sightings ... At the request of ATIC, prominent scientists analyzed Menzel's claims. None of them accepted his answers . . . Dr. Menzel was invited by Project Bluebook to apply his theories to any or all of the unexplained sightings, using Project records cleared for this purpose. He has not availed himself of this offer.

So thats it,in chapter II of this book theres an explanation for why theres denial after denial, what if the airlines had refused to fly, what if people had refused to fly what then,we wouldnt have moved an inch to the future. To this day in order to keep everyone on a business as usual basis they pretended that flying saucers simply didnt exist,it worked.

well now isnt this curious.

"We want you to emphasize the fact that our pilots aren't shooting at these things. We've been catching hell from all over the country." Chop showed me some telegrams and letters. "They even wire the President, 'In the name of God, don't shoot at the saucers.' So anything you can do—"
"Sure, I’ll include that," I said.

Now why do you suppose those people said what they said about not shooting at the saucers, its as if they knew something, dont forget this is at the end of the war and nearly the start of the Korean war,yet these people said dont shoot at the flying saucers, hmm.Thats odd.

I don't recall that but the early books by Keyhoe and Ruppelt, while interesting, are an early look at the phenom by them and more of an historical look at that time. Dolan explored the military and govt interest with his book and in far more depth.

It would be nice if Hynek were still alive since he would have many stories to tell from the late 50's and early 60's that he probably never told.

Those conversations in Keyhoes second book are just amazing,if they had taken place now there would be clamoring for disclosure.

I dont know,Hynek played it pretty close to the vest, even when he knew he was dying he didnt tell any of those stories and if you ask me he had a role to play in this and was as pokerfaced as anyone can imagine.

Here are the ones I find most compelling:

Timothy Good: Beyond Top Secret
Kean: UFOs
Cook: The Hunt for Zero-point
Vallee: anything

The books by Jim and Coral Lorenzon are fascinating historical documents from the 1960s-70s

Toward the end of his life, Hynek was the epitome of the absent-minded professor, Carol. His office was a well-known disaster area with books and papers stacked haphazardly everywhere (I saw this myself at the old CUFOS headquarters in Evanston).

Yes, he undoubtedly left many stories untold but not because he was being cagey - it just never occurred to him that some of these things were important to pass on. That may sound crazy to us, but the man's head was jam-packed with decades of UFO investigations. How would you even know where to start?

Skep I remember listening to a show on Coast, they had on the secratary to Hynek, she said among other things that Hynek "wished he knew what flying saucers were" That doesnt sound like much but it stayed with me since I heard it,to me anyway it means that Hynek nor the Air Force new anything beyond what all of us know, nothing.Im really enjoying Keyhoes books there so easy in concept,no demons no Vallee with his terrible brilliant but most annoying guess, educated guess but guess nonetheless.Just sheer enjoyment, what a simple time that was.

Kean's book is on my list....I've read the others except for Cook. Is that book tied to ufos in some way?
