I came across these after they had been tucked in a box for a long time. I didn't get to go to the 50th anniversary celebration of the Kelly, Kentucky Green Men Landing, but I got to meet the mayor of Hopkinsville that year (2005) at the Kentucky State Fair, and I got these really cool buttons.

After the state fair, several weeks later, my wife and I drove down to Nashville and saw my grade school friend, and enjoyed a trip to Cheekwood - the old Maxwell House coffee estate. I begged my wife for us to drive back - out of the way - through Kelly, Kentucky. She was cool with it. What a long drive. But we got to see the Trail of Tears Cherokee memorial in Hopkinsville. Very moving. Not a very big memorial in the scheme of things though. And Hopkinsville is not exactly a megalopolis, but a zillion times bigger than Kelly.

We had a general idea where the "event" took place. I'll tell you, it was broad daylight, and I have been in some places where they'd have to "pump sunshine in it was so far back in the woods", but this was isolated. I would not want to drive it at night. Not much to see, but a few houses, grass, trees, and I believe I took a photo of the local church. (I have no idea how to upload pictures here, so I'll put them on my blog, and post them later.) Only in my imagination did I 'see' anything interesting, but as I was driving I tried to imagine the action, the sheriff driving down that narrow road, and the reporters coming later. There just isn't anything to see now.

You might like these buttons. I put them all together, but probably for this forum the Sputnik II and Space Cadet buttons would be of most interest. I was a little kid, just 4 years old in 1960. I don't recall getting these, but I found them in an old box the other day.

I believe these are from 1960 to 1964 and came from bubble gum machines. Certainly the Huck Hound for President and Kennedy-Johnson are. The Sputnik space dog was in reference to Sputnik II (1957) with the first living creature into space. Unfortunately the dog and the capsule disintegrated about four days later. The Beatles button is dated online at 1964 - their first American appearance was in February.

Enjoy - I hope.

Space goblins are cool. Many centuries ago when people saw goblins that's probably what they were. Aliens. And that may be why people were seeing dwarfs, fairies and elves.

Chris I meant to ask you this, isnt there a guy surviving that incident,I remember seeing him on a ufo show,he said that none of the members of that family were drinkers, the sheriff that was sent tried to imply that they were into the moonshine but that wasnt the case,my question is have any people the night of the incident survived to this day?

There are not a lot of news articles on this anymore, but I recall at least one book written recently. Waverly Hills gets most of the press in Louisville. But in 2005 some younger members talked to a reporter, and they stick to their original story. The skeptic Joe Nickells - who attended the anniversary and seemed to have a good time at it - reported the ages of the 1955 participants at the time:

On the evening of Sunday, August 21, 1955, present at the Sutton farmhouse at Kelly were eleven people: widowed family matriarch Glennie Lankford (50); her children, Lonnie (12), Charlton (10), and Mary (7); two sons from her previous marriage, Elmer “Lucky” Sutton (25) and John Charley “J.C.” Sutton (21), and their respective wives, Vera (29) and Alene (27); Alene’s brother, O.P. Baker (30 or 35); and a Pennsylvania couple, Billy Ray Taylor (21) and June Taylor (18). The Taylors, along with “Lucky” and Vera Sutton, had been visiting for a while, being occasional carnival workers.

That makes Lonnie 69 today, early 60's whe he did the story below.

Over the years, Lonnie has heard the speculation that his family actually saw some escaped monkeys from the Shrine circus. He laughs at the suggestion.

"I ain't ever seen a silver monkey, or a green one," he said.

Lonnie concedes that his older brother, "Lucky" had a reputation for telling tales and that he drank. But on that night, "Lucky" wasn't drinking and he didn't invent a story about space creatures.

"He was one of the biggest liars in Hopkinsville, but he didn't lie about that," Lonnie said.

To this day, Lonnie wishes he had not crawled under the bed after his mother screamed.

"I wish I had seen one of them, but I didn't and I'm not going to lie about it," he said.

It's hard to tell, Lonnie said, how many people have made money off the Kelly Green Men since that night in 1955. It seems like everybody but his family made something off the story.

"Here I sit, broke and poor, and I ain't made nothing off it," said Lonnie, who is disabled after years of manual labor. He worked so many different jobs, it's hard to list them all … roofer, gas station attendant, truck driver, saw mill hand.

But Lonnie still has a sense of humor about his family's brush with fame. Three years ago, he went to a Halloween dance at the Hopkinsville Elks Club. He dressed as an alien. Hardly anyone knew the story behind the mask and cape that night.

Just so you know that no town is too small to cash in on their UFO heritage, this announcement arrived this week in the old Department 47 mail box:

"10 July 2012 MEDIA INVITATION Flying Saucer Recreation Revealed In Kentucky Kelly "Little Green Men" Days festival organizers reveals a 38 foot Flying Saucer to be on display during the "Little Green Men" Days festival 17 & 18 August 2012 in Kelly, KY. Media are invited to attend the revealing of the "Little Green Men" Days 38 foot Flying Saucer. The Flying Saucer is 38 feet across and 144 feet in diameter. It is constructed with approximately 2 tons of metal, lights that are synchronized with the sound effects, smoke effects, and of course "Little Green Men". The Flying Saucer is currently housed in a warehouse in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. WHEN: Monday, 16 July 2012, 5:00PM WHERE: White warehouse (old Pepsi building) at 140 North Drive, Hopkinsville, KY 42240 ( 140 North Drive, Hopkinsville, KY - Google Maps ) Also present will be invited guest, sponsors and American Idol Hollywood finalist Kayla Nettles that will perform in concert on Friday night, August 17 2012 during the "Little Green Men" Days festival. Real Image Films will be on location to film the event. Please let us know that you will be attending by sending a reply email or email to kellycommunity@kellyky.com . For inquiries, questions and the opportunity to view video footage of the construction of the Flying Saucer call Frank Brown at (270) 885-1530 or cell at (270) 498-8533."

Not sure how something can be 38 feet across AND 144 feet in diameter. Perhaps more proof of the dimension-bending technologies the aliens have at their disposal.
